It's sort of amusing, but also extremely pathetic, how Republicans (which now seems to consist entirely of self-defined ‘conservatives’) in general these days blame ''the media'' the vaguely-defined "elitists'' ''the intellectuals'' and ''liberals'' for not being ''true'' Americans..
Do they not realize that all of those groups that they daily attack are people who are almost always: ''educated''.. people who aren’t afraid to travel the world and learn about other cultures… people who realize that the United States isn’t the only country in the world???
These groups that they daily condemn are people who have generally spent a significant portion of their lives devoted to studying and learning, and who are aware that everyone on this planet isn't some isolated ''folksy'' xenophobe who goes to the type of church that every Sunday has a holy-roller type of pastor get them all pumped up on how righteous ‘they’ are, and how wrong the entire rest of the world is.
It's as if they actually value ignorance. If it isn't some grotesque and immature depiction of President Obama, it will be an alias photo of things like the American flag with a fierce eagle superimposed over it, or a weeping statue of liberty, or the old “don’t tread on me” banner, as if that will fool anyone when they trot out their hatred and attacks on our government, on our president, on people who value human diversity, or who value freedom of religion… ‘freedom of religion’ meaning that you don’t get to impose ‘your’ version of religion on everyone else.
They forget or most likely never knew, that the original ''Americans'' (other than the indigenous inhabitants) at the time that it became necessary to risk their lives to create our nation, were the type in the original 13 colonies who were generally well aware of world issues, who were well-read, and who valued literary education.
They were not some pioneer and likely poorly-educated family living in a sod hut on the prairies shooting ‘Injuns’, (most likely imagined in their minds as depicted in 'Little House on the Prairie')… that came much later, after we decided to push westward and forcibly take the rest of the continent from its original inhabitants through murder and war.
The Founding Fathers, who tended to be brilliantly intellectual and well-educated men, were completely opposite in nature to these myopic, culturally-unaware, and mentally-isolated type of people, who in their self-proclaimed ‘patriotic’ fervor, attack everyone and everything around them on a daily basis, and have an amazing penchant for conspiracy theories.
You have only to look at one of their typically insane blogs that are on any major 'conservative' news site such as Fox News, or Townhall.com.. on any given day that they eagerly swallow; hook, line, and sinker :
“Grandma’s gonna die because of Obama.”
“Government is going to force your children to become homosexuals.”
“God will kill the evil-doers.”
“Obama born in Africa to pagan witch doctors.”
“Democrats to impose martial socialistic/communist law.”
“Obama proven as racist because he hates all white people.”
Thank God that their hate, ignorance, bigotry, and devotion to unregulated markets, and what that has gotten us, are pretty apparent to all now, after 8 years of their miserable stewardship of our nation.
Liberal= root word ''liberty''.. to them, the word liberty is only for those who look, think, and act exactly like them... to liberals, that freedom is for all Americans, regardless of sexual orientation, race, gender, or religious belief, as long as that religious belief is not used to deny other citizens their human and civil rights, or to constantly attack them as ‘going to hell’.
If being a 'true' American means both that you must be a ‘conservative’ and that you must want to live a life where everyone has to follow the same ‘fire and brimstone’ type of religion... where you must value ignorance and fear of the world around you over education and multi-cultural awareness... then those people that believe that should go invent a theocracy on some remote Alaskan island, with Sarah Palin as their high-priestess if they want to force everyone to think like them, but they should also stop calling themselves ‘Americans’ if they want to deny everyone else ‘their’ liberty in personal life and religious freedom.
